MY story matters

The following is a new activity that we have never done before. We would like your feedback as well as feedback from the Ways. Please take note of what areas were unclear, not age appropriate, and what the overall impression was towards the activity.

Supplies: one 24-inch strand of rope for each Way, one 12-inch strand of rope for each Way, tie dye packets, cups of water, paper plates or towels

Preparation: Cut the strands of rope so there is one 24-inch and one 12-inch piece for each Way. Make the tie dye in the cups. Divide up the dye in enough cups so the Ways can still share but don’t have to wait very long to get started.

  1. Hand out one 24-inch and one 12-inch rope to each Way.

  2. Remind the Ways of their stories and how no one has a story exactly like theirs. Throughout their stories, there are good things, new things, hard things, and exciting things. We are going to show these things through different colors on the strings.

  3. Have a Kaleider demonstrate how to dip dye the strings using different colors.

  4. Start on one end of the rope and dip about an inch (or longer) of it into one color. Let it soak for a few seconds, then remove it.

  5. Very carefully, dip the next section of the rope into another color, holding out the previously dipped end. Continue all the way down the rope!

  6. Let the Ways dip dye their ropes. Walk around and assist as needed.

  7. After all the ropes are dip dyed, they can set them aside on paper plates or towels to dry for tomorrow!
